Abstract
Wind energy has emerged as one of the most cost-competitive and rapidly scalable pathways toward achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy) and SDG 13 (SDG 13: Climate Action). This review article provides a comprehensive analysis of wind energy technologies, innovation pathways, system integration challenges, and future research frontiers within the dual framework of energy access and climate change mitigation. It covers the full spectrum of wind turbine technologies from established onshore horizontal-axis wind turbines (HAWTs) to cutting-edge offshore floating platforms, vertical-axis turbines, and airborne wind energy systems alongside digitalization strategies including artificial intelligence, digital twins, and advanced control systems that are transforming performance optimization. System integration challenges spanning grid connection, energy storage coupling, hybrid renewable systems, and developing-country deployment are critically assessed in the context of SDG 7 and SDG 13 targets. Key barriers including cost, environmental impact, land use, social acceptance, supply chain constraints, and policy gaps are examined alongside emerging research opportunities. This review synthesizes current knowledge and identifies priority directions for future research and investment to accelerate wind energy deployment in support of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and the Paris Agreement temperature goals.
